Quick Facts about Mayday:
How did Mayday begin? Mayday was founded by Casey Wright of Peaches Products in Rochester, NY and Amanda Preske of Circuit Breaker Labs and District Rebel Market in Washington, D.C. Casey and Amanda longed for a show that welcomed the offbeat and quirky handmade work of their favorite Rochester-area artists. Mayday! Underground quickly became a welcome departure from the usual fine art shows and street festivals.
Why is the show called Mayday! Underground? The first event was held on May 1, 2010 in the basement of an old factory on St. Paul across from the brewery. We’ve come a long way since then, while still holding tight to our gritty paint-splattered roots.
What’s with the owl? Mayday! founder Casey Wright has worked extensively with owl rescue organizations, dedicating hundreds of hours to their well-being, and the very first Mayday! imagery featured her hand-drawn owls. We’ve continued to honor that in our current graphics with a burrowing owl by Chris Charles. Plus, owls are just really fascinating creatures, so why not?
As of January 2020, the events are organized by Casey Wright of Peaches Products, with help from a changing group of artist volunteers who help with jurying, graphics, and administrative tasks.
